St. Charles, Missouri is located along the banks of the Missouri River in St. Charles County, approximately twenty-five miles northwest of the city of St. Louis.  The city was first settled in 1769 by French-Canadian fur trapper Louis Blanchette, who named the settlement Les Petites Côtes, which means “the little hills.”  Other early settlers to the area include Daniel Morgan Boone, the son of frontiersman Daniel Boone in 1795, followed by his famous father a few years later, and the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1804.  Today, St. Charles serves as the county seat for St. Charles County and is home to approximately 65,000 residents who enjoy the weather produced by the area’s transitional climate zone that brings hot, humid summers and cold, snowy winters with lovely weather in the springtime and fall.

St. Charles is a haven for history buffs and Historic Main Street in downtown St. Charles is a great place for history lovers to begin a tour of the city’s local historic sites.  Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the thirteen-block stretch is dotted with literally dozens of historic buildings, such as the Henry D. Meyer Drug building, circa 1850; Odd Fellows Hall, circa 1878; and Maertens Tobacco & Cigar Factory, circa 1890.  Mingled in amongst the history and lore are a bevy of shops, restaurants, and businesses that will keep visitors happy for hours!

The city of St. Charles abounds in entertainment and activities that feature something for everyone!  Whether you visit the Foundry Art Center for a unique experience in the visual arts, the Family Arena for concerts and sporting events, or the Lewis & Clark Boat House & Nature Center for an educational experience in local history, you are bound to have a great time in St. Charles!
